"Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language".
Henley Green Primary School is a Voice 21 school as we believe spoken language to be essential in the development and achievement of our children across the curriculum. Oracy is a central thread in every subject and lesson and is a tool staff and children use to connect, further and support their learning.
In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching children to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. We also aim for all of our children to know that their voices have value and for them to have the confidence to use this unique superpower to enable them to fulfil their potential.
At Henley Green Primary School, everyone is respected, included and each voice is valued. We know that everyone has their own unique views and that expressing and tolerating these is vital for a harmonious community within and outside of school. We will support every member of our school to have the confidence and emotional intelligence to communicate effectively, build positive relationships and prepare for their next steps in life.
Not only do we feel it is important to teach children to learn to talk, we also believe that children learn most effectively through talk. We encourage talk in all our lessons to allow children to collaboratively discuss ideas, thoughts and judgements. We also empower our pupils to use talk to establish and maintain positive relationships effectively Children take responsibility for their own learning through talk and discover new information in pairs, trios, circles, and a variety of other groupings.
